Quick Answer

What is a SWMS?

A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is required for high-risk construction work under the model WHS framework and corresponding state and territory requirements. Victoria operates under its separate OHS framework. A SWMS describes the work, hazards, risks, and control measures to be used on site.

The model WHS Regulations identify 18 categories of high-risk construction work, including work involving certain fall risks, excavation, confined spaces, demolition, asbestos, and work near powered mobile plant. Check the regulator guidance that applies where the work will be performed.

A SWMS typically includes the work activity, associated hazards, risk ratings, control measures, PPE requirements, and worker sign-off. It must be reviewed for the actual work, site, workers, and applicable jurisdiction before use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this really free? What's the catch?
Yes—one SWMS per email address at no cost. No credit card is required. Free registration unlocks the full editable Word and PDF files; paid plans are available when you need more documents or company-wide workflows.
Does the SWMS cover Australian requirements?
The draft is structured around the information required for high-risk construction work in Australian jurisdictions. Because laws and regulator guidance vary—including Victoria's separate OHS framework—you must review it for the work, site, workers, and jurisdiction before use.
Can I edit the SWMS after I receive it?
Absolutely. You'll receive both a Microsoft Word (.docx) file and a PDF. The Word version is fully editable — change any wording, add your company logo, attach photos, or adapt it to site-specific conditions.
What if my work activity isn't on your list?
No problem — just type any SWMS name (like "Concrete Polishing SWMS" or "Tower Crane Erection SWMS") and briefly describe the work. Our AI will generate hazards, risks, and controls specific to your task.
How long does it take?
The tested flow creates the SWMS draft and makes the files available in about 2 minutes.
Can I get SWMS for every job I do?
The free tool gives you one SWMS per email. For unlimited auto-customised SWMS, policies, procedures, and a full compliance portal, check out our Blue Safe WHS plans.
Do I need a SWMS for my work?
The model WHS framework and corresponding jurisdiction requirements require a SWMS for high-risk construction work. Victoria uses a separate OHS framework. Categories and definitions can vary, so check the regulator guidance where the work will be performed.
